Q. Can anyone use the Craft Yarn Council symbols?

A. Yes, downloads of the graphic symbols are available at this web site at no charge. However, we ask that if you use them in any publication that you advise us in an e-mail of your intention to use them and that the following credit line be given:

Q. Is any yarn in a category “4” weight yarn interchangeable with another yarn in the same category.

A. The Standard Yarn Weight System should not be used as an interchangeability chart. While it is a possible that two different yarns in one weight category can be interchanged, you must knit or crochet a gauge swatch to be sure. Even if the gauges of the two yarns are the same and match the pattern, there are other factors to consider, such as the “hand” or softness and drapability of the yarn.

Q. I have found differences in the sizes of crochet hooks. Is this possible?

A. In working with manufacturers to develop these Standards & Guidelines, we realized there were differences in how various companies numbered their hook sizes. That was the main reason we adopted the metric sizing, which is the actual measurement (diameter) of the hook.

Q. Will you be making regular updates to these guidelines?

A. From the beginning of this project, CYC agreed that the Standards & Guidelines must be organic, i.e., growing and changing as the marketplace changes.

Q. I’d like to suggest something to add to the industry guidelines. How do I go about it?

A. If you have a suggestion, please e-mail CYC with your idea, along with the reasons why you feel this addition/change is important. The Standards & Guidelines committee meets periodically and will review these suggestions.
